Google Contacts May Simplify Video Calling App Choice

Google Contacts May Simplify Video Calling App Choice

We all use Google Contacts on our phones daily to keep track of our friends, family, and colleagues. But have you ever thought about how it helps us make video calls too? Most of the time, we don’t give much thought to how seamlessly Google Contacts works with other apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, or Zoom to help us communicate. But now, Google Contacts has a new feature that could make our video calling experience even better!

Currently, when we want to make a video call, Google Contacts either automatically uses carrier video calling or requires us to open another app like WhatsApp or Zoom separately. To use a third-party app, we have to go to the contact details and scroll down to the “Connected apps” section. While this works, it isn’t the most user-friendly or efficient way to make a call. But Google is working on something that could make video calling smoother and easier than ever before.

What’s Changing in Google Contacts?

Google is testing a new feature that could make video calling much simpler. In the upcoming Google Contacts update, users will be able to set a default video calling app. This means you will no longer need to go through extra steps to choose an app every time you want to make a video call. Instead, you can select your favorite app, and Google Contacts will automatically use it for video calls.

So, for example, if you prefer using WhatsApp for video calls, you can set it as your default app. When you want to call a contact, Google Contacts will directly use WhatsApp, skipping the need for you to open the app separately. This is a huge time-saver, especially for those who make frequent video calls.

How Will This Feature Work?

  1. Select Your Default Video Calling App:
When you press and hold the video call icon next to a contact’s name, you will get the option to choose which video calling app you want to use. You can choose from popular apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, Zoom, or others.
  2. Easy Access to Chosen App:
Once you’ve selected the app, the app icon will appear on the contact page. It will replace the carrier’s default video call icon. From now on, whenever you click the video call button, it will automatically use your chosen app.
  3. Multiple Numbers, Multiple Options:
If a contact has multiple phone numbers and you want to choose a specific one, you can long-press the video call icon, and it will show you all the available calling options. This means you can easily select the best app to use based on the contact’s available number.
  4. Fallback to Carrier Calls:
If your chosen app, such as WhatsApp, doesn’t support video calling with that specific contact, Google Contacts will show a network bar indicator, informing you that the call will be directed to the default carrier video call.

Why Is This Change Important?

This change may seem small, but it will greatly improve the user experience. Here’s why:

  1. Less Hassle for Users:
Right now, when you want to make a video call, you often have to open an app separately, find the contact, and then make the call. This new feature will save you time and effort by allowing you to make calls directly from Google Contacts.
  2. Better Integration with Third-Party Apps:
With messaging and video call apps like WhatsApp, Zoom, Telegram, and Facebook Messenger becoming more popular, Google is making it easier for users to access their preferred platforms for video calls. This feature will eliminate the need to switch between apps and make video calls more seamless.
  3. Personalization for Users:
Each person has their preferred way to communicate. Some may prefer WhatsApp for its ease of use, while others might choose Zoom for professional calls. This feature gives users the flexibility to set their own default app, personalizing the experience based on their needs.

What Apps Are Popular for Video Calling?

The success of this feature depends on the apps users love. Here are some of the most popular video calling apps today:

When Will This Feature Be Available?

As of now, this feature is not yet available to all users. It is still being tested in beta and could be rolled out to users within the next year. If you want to use third-party video calling apps from Google Contacts in the meantime, you will have to keep using the extra steps to access them.

A Bright Future for Google Contacts Users

The upcoming changes to Google Contacts will make it much easier for users to make video calls without the hassle of switching between apps. This update will bring more convenience and efficiency for users, especially those who rely on third-party apps like WhatsApp, Zoom, or Messenger. With this new feature, making video calls will be quicker, simpler, and more enjoyable.

Google move to make video calling more seamless is a great example of how technology can improve our daily lives. Whether you’re calling family, friends, or colleagues, this feature will make the process smoother and more user-friendly.
