The Nuclear Medicine Oncology and Radiotherapy Institute (NORI) in Islamabad has made a major breakthrough in cancer treatment by acquiring a state-of-the-art cyclotron. This new technology, valued at Rs. 1.5 billion, allows the production of Gallium 68 isotopes, which are used for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans. This technology is a significant development because it provides life-saving diagnostic services to cancer patients in Islamabad and nearby areas, improving access to advanced medical care.

What is Cyclotron Technology?

Cyclotron technology is a key part of medical imaging. It helps produce radioactive isotopes, such as Gallium 68, used in PET scans. PET scans are important because they allow doctors to see how organs and tissues are working in the body, which helps in diagnosing cancer at an early stage. This technology will benefit patients within a 200-kilometer radius of Islamabad, who previously had to travel to Lahore for this specialized treatment.

Why is this Technology Important?

Before this, Gallium 68 isotopes were only available in Lahore, which created problems for patients in the northern regions of Pakistan. The isotopes have a short life span and can’t be transported for long distances. This meant that many patients had to wait for treatment, which sometimes worsened their condition.

With this new cyclotron at NORI, these isotopes can now be produced locally, making PET scans more accessible to people in the northern areas.

Patient Care at NORI

NORI is known for its patient-centered approach. According to Dr. Muhammad Faheem, the Director of NORI, the hospital has a no-refusal policy. This means they do not turn away any cancer patient, even if they come from far away or cannot afford treatment. Thanks to this policy, NORI and its affiliated hospitals have been able to treat 80% of cancer patients across the country.

The hospital also offers medicines at a 40% discount to in-patients, making cancer treatment more affordable. Dr. Faheem emphasized NORI’s commitment to providing the best care, following ethical practices, and ensuring transparency in all hospital operations.

Role of NORI in Pakistan Cancer Treatment

Since its establishment in 1983, NORI has become one of Pakistan’s most important cancer treatment centers. Shahid Riaz Khan, Director General of Scientific Information and Public Relations at the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, praised the hospital for its work in improving cancer care. He highlighted how many patients, who were initially told they couldn’t be treated by private hospitals, recovered fully after receiving treatment at NORI.

Dr. Shazia Fatima, Director General of the Nuclear Medicine and Oncology Centre, mentioned that NORI plays a key role in developing cancer data registries, creating awareness, and training doctors from other countries. She also pointed out that Pakistan has around 40 cancer treatment centers, with half of them under the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). 50% of Pakistan’s radiation oncologists work in AEC hospitals, which are equipped with advanced technologies like the CyberKnife system.

The Importance of Early Diagnosis

Dr. Fatima stressed that early diagnosis of cancer can greatly reduce treatment costs and improve patient outcomes. This is why NORI focuses on early cancer detection, which is crucial for saving lives and improving survival rates.

Additionally, the Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (PINSTECH), which produces essential medicines for cancer treatment, saves the country about Rs. 350 million annually by reducing the need for expensive imported medicines.

Recognition of NORI Achievements

NORI’s hard work and success have not gone unnoticed. In 2023, NORI was recognized as a “Ray of Hope” by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for its contributions to cancer treatment and the use of nuclear technology for medical purposes.

Success Stories from NORI

One of the success stories from NORI is that of Mohammad Zia, a 54-year-old cancer survivor. Zia had been misdiagnosed by other hospitals and was initially given little hope. However, when he came to NORI, he received an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. After a year of treatment at NORI, Zia is now cancer-free and continues to live a healthy life. His story is a powerful example of how NORI’s efforts are saving lives and bringing hope to cancer patients.
