Pakistan is upgrading its internet infrastructure by connecting to a new undersea cable system. This follows the disconnection of the SMW-3 cable and the linking to the Africa-2 cable network. The new system will improve internet speed and capacity and is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025.
The Oldest Cable Network: SMW-3
The SMW-3 undersea cable network, launched in 1999, has been the oldest and longest in the world. It connected several countries, including Pakistan, for over two decades. However, it is now being replaced to accommodate the growing demand for faster and more reliable internet.
Connecting to the Africa-2 Cable Network
On Tuesday, Pakistan officially connected to the Africa-2 cable network. This network links 33 countries across three continents: Africa, Asia, and Europe. The new system is expected to offer faster internet speeds and better connectivity when it goes live by 2025.
Introducing AAE-2 Cable System
Pakistan is preparing to connect to the AAE-2 (Africa, Asia, and Europe) cable system, which spans 45,000 kilometers. This advanced cable can handle 180 terabytes per second (tbps) of data, boosting internet capacity. Pakistan has secured 1 terabyte per second (tbps) for its use.
AAE-2 Cable Ownership and Technology
The AAE-2 is owned by a group of eight companies, including Meta and Vodafone. It uses SDM1 technology, which can transmit data at incredibly fast speeds. The cable will land in Hawksbay, Karachi, and the first installation phase began on December 1, 2023. The second phase will start in April 2024.
Other Internet Cables in Pakistan
Apart from the AAE-2, Pakistan uses several other international internet cables, such as SMW-5 and TWA-1. PTCL also operates the AAE-1, SMW-4, and IMEWE cables, connecting Pakistan to the world. Cyber Internet Services operates the PEACE cable, linking China to Europe via Pakistan.
Increasing Internet Capacity
With the addition of the AAE-2 cable, Pakistan internet capacity will increase to 14 terabytes per second (tbps) by 2025. This is essential as internet consumption continues to rise. Pakistan maintains extra capacity to ensure uninterrupted service if an undersea cable is damaged.
Conclusion: A Boost for Pakistan Digital Future
The new undersea cable system, AAE-2, will improve Pakistan internet infrastructure and provide faster and more reliable internet. This will help meet the growing digital needs of the country, supporting its economic and technological growth in the coming years.
